Reason maintenance distinguishes between base facts (preconditions that can be later rejected) and derived facts, unlike belief revision which treats all facts as equally important.

Summary

The system tracks which starting assumptions are the roots and which conclusions hang off them, so when a root assumption gets challenged or withdrawn, it can quickly see which downstream conclusions need to be reconsidered. This matters because it makes the reasoning process auditable and reversible — you are not stuck treating every fact as permanently solid the way a flat belief-revision approach would.
