LLMs are a subset of foundation models, which are pretrained on broad data and adapted to downstream tasks
Summary
Large language models are just one flavor of a broader category of models that learn general patterns from huge datasets and are later specialized for particular jobs. This matters because it reminds us that the capabilities and limitations we see in chatbots aren't unique to language processing — they reflect a shared design choice (train wide, then narrow) that also underpins image generators, drug-discovery models, and other foundation-model systems.
