Deprecated Claude models remain accessible to paid claude.ai subscribers and are available on the API by request, but are no longer the default.
Summary
Older Claude model versions haven't been fully shut off; paying users can still reach them through the web app and by explicitly requesting them on the API, but the system no longer hands them out automatically. This matters because anything built against a retired model version will keep working for now, but it's on a countdown — the system should treat those dependencies as fragile and plan a migration before access is eventually cut entirely.
Dependents
These beliefs depend on this one:
- IN anthropic-has-comprehensive-model-lifecycle-policy — Anthropic maintains a structured model lifecycle that distinguishes between deprecation (models still accessible with restrictions) and retirement (scheduled removal from service), with at least one model scheduled for retirement in August 2026. Deprecated models remain available to paid subscribers and via API by request. Anthropic also preserves weights of retired models as a precaution in case models have morally relevant preferences, conducting exit interviews before retirement.
